All households in baboon problem areas must have an animal proof bin for domestic waste.
A baboon proof bin doesn’t have to be a wheelie bin but some people have been able to convert their bin for less than R250.
Baboon-resistant 240-litre Wheelie bins, with locks, can be purchased at the municipal offices and it will be delivered to your home. Bins cost R1 636 (the price is inclusive of VAT and is valid 1 July 2023 – 30 June 2024).
Alternatively, bins can be bought at any hardware store and baboon proof locks can be fitted, at an additional charge, on your existing bin.
There are private service providers in the Overstrand who can assist with transforming a wheelie bin to be baboon proofed. Please contact your town’s Baboon Liaison Group (BLG) for information.
Above is not a comprehensive list of service providers as future designs and manufactures may be included at the discretion of the Overstrand Waste Manager once their locking systems have been tested and found to comply with the requirements of the solid waste operational team.
So, the long and the short of it is:
- Secure bin with latch, strap, padlock or clip at all times
- No refuse (black) bags may be left on pavements or on top of or outside bins in baboon affected areas
- Please do not place excess rubbish bags next to the municipal bins. Any excessive refuse must be taken to either a transfer station, public drop-off or landfill site for disposal.
Please ensure that your waste is on the sidewalk in an animal proof container by no later than 07:00 on the morning of collection. Please do not put black bags on pavements overnight.
If you are letting your property over weekends and the holiday season, bring all arrangements regarding the treatment of household waste to your tenants’ attention.
The declared problem animal areas are Kleinmond (including Arabella), Betty’s Bay, Rooiels, Pringle Bay, portion of Onrus, Voëlklip, Fernkloof (including the Golf Estate), Hermanus Heights, Eastcliff, Kwaaiwater and a portion of Hawston.
